How to use RealView
RealView is very simple to use so this section only points out a few of the not-so-obvious features you might want to check out.
Drag and Drop (NEW!)
You can drop a files on RealView's windows and the file will be opened in a separate window. You can also drag text and pictures embedded inside the text to the desktop or into another application's window.
Zooming and Info (NEW!)
You can view image files at different zoom levels, from 12.5 percent to 400 percent. Information about those files, including size, colors, etc. may be toggled on and off on the fly.
"Smart Open" (NEW!)
When you open a file with RealView, it will try to determine the best viewing mode for the file according to the file type and content of the file. "Smart Open" speeds up opening files that should be viewed as hexadecimal text and images.
New From Clipboard (NEW!)
Located at the bottom of the edit menu the "New From Clipboard" option allows you to see the clipboard contents in a window and save it into a file. This option is especially useful when you copy finder icons or text from another application.
Find
From the "File" menu you can launch a text or hexadecimal string search.. The search is performed from start to end or from the place you've last clicked at onward.
NOTE: Currently the text search is case sensitive.
Preferences
From the "File" menu you can open the 'Preferences' dialog box. Use the preferences to set:
• Default Display Mode: If you wish RealView, when it opens a file, to automatically identify the file and display it as it is, select 'ORIGINAL'. If you wish to see newly opened files as plain text, select 'TEXT'. To see files as Hex-data select 'HEXADECIMAL'.
• Default Font and Default Size: Here you can select the default font and default font size for the Text and Hexadecimal display modes.
• Default Page Setup: Pressing this button will bring up the standard Page Setup dialog box where you can choose the page size on which RealView would layout newly opened files.
• Show document details: Here you can Turn on/off files details display (at the top of the window).
Tips
Here are some (hopefully) helpful tips to help you get the most out of RealView:
Getting the Best Performance
RealView is designed to work perfectly on any Macintosh™ computer from the MacII onwards, but it can benefit from a faster processor and more memory. By default, RealView's memory partition is set to 1024k (1MB). This partition will serve you well with most tasks, but increasing the memory partition (through the "Get Info" dialog box in the finder) will allow RealView to open files even faster, especially with high resolution images. (Try giving RealView a 3092k partition)
Closing All Windows
Clicking on a windows close box while holding the 'Option' key will close all open windows.
Opening very large files
RealView can open any file of any size but it cannot open files that are larger than it's own memory partition. If you get a 'not enough memory' error when trying to open a file you should Quit RealView, select it's icon in the finder, choose 'Get Info' from the 'File' menu and allocate more memory to RealView.
Aborting long processes
You can abort any time consuming processes (such as drawing a large, high resolution image or opening a very large file) by pressing . (Command key + Period).
Navigating with the arrow keys (NEW!)
Pressing the arrow keys will scroll the window by the same distance as clicking the scroll bar buttons. This works for left and right as well as for up and down.
